In this depiction, Abra the maid is in the foreground holding the severed head on her hip. Judith’s hand is on her shoulder, perhaps urging her to move quickly or to steady her, as they both turn to look behind them. Judith is dressed in gold-trimmed velvet, indicating her finest clothing. The end of the sword that faces the viewer shows the open-mouthed Medusa. The face of Medusa is directed at the face of Holofernes. The viewer’s eye is drawn up diagonally to Judith who wears a pearl drop earring, and a cameo fixed in her elaborately braided hair. Art historians have noted there are parallels between this Judith profile and Michaelangelo’s David and some suggest that David is on the cameo in this painting. Both Judith and David were extremely important figures for the people of Florence.
