This is the most famous painting of Allori and has been copied numerous times. Allori painted the head of Holofernes as a self-portrait and Judith as his lover. The luxurious clothing of Judith is an homage to Florence’s textile industry. The painter credits Caravaggio and Artemesia Gentileschi, whose Judith’s paintings are also found in the Visual Museum. The beauty of the heroine is juxtaposed against the violence of the decapitated head in her hand. For the people of Florence, Judith represented courage and faith and the ability to gain freedom from an oppressor.
