Tamar and Judah
The Finding of Moses
After Judah slept with his daughter-in-law when she was disguised as a prostitute, he sent his friend Hirah the Adullamite with a lamb to exchange it for his signet, cord, and staff, which he had given to her as a pledge (Gen 38:20). This painting depicts Hirah with a lamb across his shoulders journeying to find Tamar. When he goes to the location where Judah encountered her, she is not there, thus, he learns that she wasn’t a prostitute. Three months later, a pregnant Tamar identifies Judah as the father to her unborn child by having his signet, cord, and staff in her possession.
