This stunning statue of St. Agatha is characteristic of most representations of her. The halo testifies to her martyrdom and sainthood. Agatha is depicted gazing toward heaven as she looked to Christ in the face of terrifying persecution and torture. She holds a plate with her breasts that were removed by edict of the proconsul Quintius after she continually refused to recant her faith in Jesus. Agatha also holds a palm branch, a symbol of martyrdom and resurrection.
