Jesus engages the woman at the well in conversation as he travels from Judea to Galilee. While Jews avoided Samaria and traveled around the region rather than through it, Jesus ventured through the land and engaged with its people. The tone in this painting between Jesus and the woman carries an informality in their relaxed, natural body language. In stark contrast, behind them a fight seems to be breaking out. A child is at the woman’s feet, tugging at her clothing. While Scripture is silent about others at the well (except it notes that the disciples arrive later), the presence of a child in this depiction elicits a contemplation of the difficulties of her life. The uncertainties of this painting invite the viewer to ask questions and engage with the biblical text and what is illustrated.
