Apollonia Baptism
Apollonia Martyrdom
It is significant that the artist chose to begin the series of panels with the baptism of Saint Apollonia. The viewer is reminded of her commitment to her faith and that her baptism was not only attended by a heavenly being, but the angel is administering the sacrament. Apollonia kneels to receive her baptism, and her arms are close to being in the crossed-heart gesture, which often signifies
fidelity in religious art.
