Apollonia Martyrdom
Apollonia Martyrdom
Apollonia is kneeling in prayer, portraying humility in the face of her accusers. The man with the red hat holds a stick, and the Dionysius account of this time of persecution mentioned beating Christians with sticks. The men’s hands that surround her are depicted in
classical Greco-Roman rhetorical positions used often in art of this time, signifying a conversation is occurring. In the background are three angels, with a human in their midst. It bears notice that the human is wearing similar colored clothing to what Apollonia wears in all of the panels. Perhaps the artist is illustrating how the angels are ministering to her as shefaces accusations and persecution.
