This fresco depicts St. Barbara with an unnamed female. While the images are difficult to distinguish, the tower that is widely associated with Barbara is recognizable. The image is part of a series of frescoes located in the lower choir of the Santa Clara Convent in Spain. The paintings narrate a broad iconography, including Saint Francis of Assisi, Saint Clare, Saint Anthony of Padua, Saint Dominic, Saint Jerome, Saint Christopher and Saint Sebastian. Men and women of the medieval church founded monastic orders whose impact extends into the modern era. Both men and women throughout the history of the church have been martyred, and their stories continue to impact the church today.
