Clare of Assisi
Clare is considered the Mother of the Abbey, and as the founder and superior of the first order of Franciscan nuns, she is often painted alongside the Madonna and Child. She is commonly painted on one side with Francis on the other.
These types of paintings were useful in enhancing the spiritual authority of saints like Clare and Francis.
