Juan Guas was one of a group of architects known for their ornamental Isabelline style that became the dominant architectural style of the Crown of Castile. Here, Guas has depicted St. Clare standing but in addition to the traditional monstrance, Clare is also holding a book. There is something about the weight of stone that provides gravitas to the figure that is memorialized. Clare had a significant impact on the church far beyond her lifetime, and her life of service and her life of prayer continues to inspire today.
