Deborah was a prophetess and judge, ruling Israel from the hill country of Ephraim. As a prophetess, she spoke the words of God to the people. As a judge, she governed as the highest official for the nation. Deborah summoned Barak and instructed him to go to battle against Sisera, the commander of the army for Canaan. Barak was willing to go into battle as long as Deborah accompanied him. She agreed and pronounced that the glory for the victory would go to a woman. Indeed, while Barak conquered the army, Jael killed Sisera by driving a tent peg through his temple. Deborah and Barak praised God through song to celebrate their victory, recognizing Deborah’s leadership and Jael’s bravery (Judg 5). In this image Deborah is depicted as a warrior ready for battle.
