Mary
Barbara
This center medallion piece sits above the front door of Parroquia Santa Barbara. Elizabeth and Mary stand out in this sculpture as they are depicted popping outward, almost lifelike. Though their bodies are covered by heavy garments, making the viewer unable to see their pregnant stomachs, it is clear that these women share a deep joy at their shared experience. As they gaze into one another's eyes, the depth of their emotion is depicted in their soft smiles and grasping of hands. Mary stands taller than Elizabeth and looks downward, her hand upon her belly. To the left of Mary, Joseph stands in the background with a staff in his right hand, his left arm pointing toward Mary. To the right of Elizabeth, Zechariah stands with his left arm open and pointing outward toward the temple door. Both men gaze at their wives, and cherubs (putti) float on clouds above the women.
