God creating Eve was installed in the campanile (bell tower) of the Florence Cathedral under the supervision of Giotto di Bondone. Located on the west façade of the bell tower, the marble panel was designed to be viewed from below, hence the detail on the underside of Eve’s body is more intricate than her back. The positioning of her body would give the appearance of being impacted by gravity, which is unusual–the iconography of that time typically showed her weightless and floating. This panel was next to Pisano’s Creation of Adam in which God held a book in his left hand indicating the Word. In Eve’s creation, the book is replaced by God holding her right arm.
