In the first relief on the front of the Duomo in Orvieto, the lower right section contains a depiction of the woman being created out of the man’s side (Gen 2:21–22). The man is laying on his side, sound asleep, while God has a hand on the woman’s shoulder as her feet are still within the man’s side, indicating the movement of her body out from his torso. Surrounded by lush trees and vegetation, an angel looks on. This depiction of the creation account in Genesis draws on a literal interpretation of the creation story in Genesis 2.
