Noli Me Tangere
Pudentiana and Praxedes
This fresco by Fra Angelico decorates one of the forty-four cells on the upper floor of the Convent of San Marco in Florence. Angelico was a Dominican monk and lived at the monastery and painted Biblical scenes with deep reverence and piety. Angelico’s version of noli me tangere (do not cling to me) contains Mary Magdalene and the risen Jesus Christ. This scene is from John 20: 14-18 where Mary Magdalene is weeping in the garden outside the tomb because Jesus’ body was missing. She is so distraught that she confuses him with the gardener, which is illustrated by Jesus holding a garden hoe as well as the many plants and trees in this painting replicate. Palm branches and trees are also a symbol of resurrection. As Mary rises and reaches for Jesus, he is walking away. The scars are visible on his hands and feet.
