The Women of Exodus: Pharoah's daughter, Moses, palace servant, Miriam, Jochebed
This relief on the west façade of the Milan Cathedral depicts the Exodus account of the finding of Moses in the Nile. Baby Moses is being pulled out of the water by the maid of Pharaoh’s daughter, who saw him in the river and took compassion on him. In the background, Moses’s sister and mother watch over him fearfully and fretfully. The Pharaoh’s daughter later names him “Moses” because she “drew him out of the water” (Exod 2:1-10).
