In this 16th century painting by Juan de Borgoña, Mary and Elizabeth embrace each other. In her advanced stage of pregnancy, Elizabeth is in a kneeling posture looking up at Mary with an expression of wonder on her face. Mary, dressed in the traditional blue robe, supports Elizabeth while tenderly returning the embrace. Both women are haloed, signifying spiritual holiness and their importance in the biblical narrative.
