The story of the life of Barbara invites reflection on how women throughout history have been used and even abused because of their physical attributes. In Barbara's story, we learn that she was locked away because of her beauty, and González Veláquez has depicted her physicality in his idealistic art. Barbara is adorned with jewels and flowers are woven into her hair, further accentuating her beauty. And yet, Barbara stands in a posture of submissiveness, with an open hand, offering herself and all of her beauty to Jesus.
Antonio González Veláquez was an 18th century Spanish painter who completed his artistic training in the workshop of the Corrado Giaquinto, one of the chief representatives of rococo painting in Rome. González Veláquez developed his own artistic style which earned him awards and merit as an important artist in 18th century Spain. His work here depicts Barbara standing at the feet of Jesus, looking up at him.
